Last week of Situate and a great group of participants join me in the Loft
Jen: arrived first, with a coffee thermos that she uses everyday. We discussed daily rituals, and memories of "adult habits" that we have from childhood, and how that compares and affects our own "adult habits."
Jess: was next, and arrived with a paperback copy of the complete works of Jane Austin. We had a great conversation about literature, the importance of real physical books, and reading in public as a method of combating social awkwardness and shyness.
Sheri: arrived next, with a small wooden carved box, with pressed flowers on the top. Her daughter gave it to her as a gift a few years ago. We spoke about "tidyness" and the impulse to tuck things away into small spaces...
Wendy: was the last participant of the day. She arrived with a very small object, a glass marble that was a favourite of hers throughout her childhood when playing marbles with a childhood friend and neighbour. Nicknamed "caramel" the marble is an orange and milky white globe.
The marble has been with Wendy since childhood, throughout various moves. We discussed childhood, neighbourhoods and desires for strong communities close to home. Wendy is a self proclaimed "tidy person" and one of the few participants who has claimed to not accumulate or hold onto many superfluous items, but somehow, the marble has stayed with her.
We joked that the marble has perhaps been following her in an orbit-like manner, akin to a moon. What if we all had moons orbiting our bodies along with our everyday movements? What happens when our moons' orbits intersect with others'?
